MACH was commissioned by the Federal Office for Buildings and Logistics (BBL) to redesign the Swiss Consulate General in Mumbai. As part of the reorganisation of consular services, new areas were created for the Swiss Business Hub, Swissnex and Switzerland Tourism. The aim was to establish a shared platform for interaction and communication for the four institutions brought together under one roof. The project served as a pilot for the future direction of Swiss consulates worldwide.
The central challenge lay in translating Swiss values such as openness, transparency and clarity into a convincing spatial concept while meeting the high security requirements of a foreign mission. The four departments were organised around a common centre inspired by a village and its main square. An interplay of “houses” and open zones creates clear orientation, long sightlines and a generous space with abundant natural light. Fluid transitions and the dynamic layout encourage exchange and synergies between employees and visitors.
A bright local terrazzo floor evokes snowy Swiss landscapes, while ash wood finishes reference traditional Swiss wooden houses. Subtle variations in materials and colours – particularly in the furnishings – provide gentle differentiation between the areas without compromising their cohesion within the overall consulate.
